Chandigarh, on August 24.
Last week, the BJP surprised everyone by announcing the candidates for the elections in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, even before the Election Commission declared the poll schedules. The political party chose 39 people to run for the 230 seats in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly and 21 people to run for the 90 seats in the Chhattisgarh Assembly.
These were the seats that the saffron party lost in the 2018 Assembly elections.
This was the first time the BJP announced the people running for election well before the dates were set for the voting process. Sometimes, the party chooses candidates at the very last moment before the deadline for nominations. This usually occurs in seats where the party already has a representative or where multiple party members want to be the candidate.
However, the BJP announced the seats in MP and Chhattisgarh on August 17 that it had previously lost in 2018. Sources have revealed that the party is thinking of announcing candidates early for most of the seats in three important states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh. These states will have elections later this year.
In 2018, the BJP did not win in three states.
The BJP eventually gained control of Madhya Pradesh, which is an important place for the RSS, by removing the Kamal Nath government of the Congress. However, it had actually lost three important states in the previous Assembly elections.
The saffron party won a majority of seats in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan in 2018. They won 109 out of 230 seats in Madhya Pradesh, 15 out of 90 seats in Chhattisgarh, and 73 out of 200 seats in Rajasthan.
Rajasthan’s problem
The party wants to announce their candidates for the seats they lost in three states soon. However, in Rajasthan, they need to address the rumors about Vasundhara Raje, who is one of the top contenders for the Chief Minister position in that state.
The fact that she hasn’t been attending certain parties and state panels has made people wonder what her future in politics will be. Some people think that the national BJP leaders might be considering someone else for the position of Chief Minister instead of her. Even though the central leaders say that these panels don’t usually include state leaders, it is strange that the former Chief Minister is not part of them.
Defeating the dislike of current leaders in Madhya Pradesh.
The BJP is announcing candidates for seats it did not win in 2018, in order to have an advantage over the rival Congress party. The seats are very challenging, and the BJP wants their candidates to have three months to get ready and campaign.
This means that in Madhya Pradesh, the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been in power for 18 years and many people are not happy with this. However, the central leadership believes that this will not impact the chances of winning the seats they lost in 2018. The party thinks that if they lose some seats due to people being unhappy with the current government, they may gain seats that they previously lost. Any additional seats won may also help make up for the expected losses in challenging areas like Gwalior.
MP: Other problems or concerns.
In 2018, the BJP won 109 seats, which was not enough to reach half of the total seats by seven seats. On the other hand, the Congress was the party that won the most seats with 114. Despite not having the most seats, Kamal Nath was able to create a government with the help of the SP, BSP, and independent MLAs.
He was removed from power by a coup organized by Jyotiraditya Scindia, who switched to the BJP along with his 22 MLAs.
In these elections, besides the usual dislike for the current government after being in power for 18 years, there is also discussion about division and conflict within the party members, particularly in the Gwalior-Chambal area, which has always been a strong support base for Scindia.
In the recent elections, Congress got 26 seats and BJP got only 7 out of the total 34 seats in the area. Local leaders are now saying that it would have been better for the BJP if Nath had been allowed to finish his term.
In 2023, it is uncertain who will receive the ticket, whether it be the Congress MLAs who joined with Scindia or the regular BJP workers. There will be a lot of upset and frustration when the candidates are announced. BJP’s traditional supporters also say they will not seek votes for former Congress leaders running on BJP tickets, according to them.
In all three states, the BJP is competing against the Congress.
