India on Wednesday achieved a significant milestone by becoming the fourth country in the world to launch a spacecraft to the moon. It also made history by being the first country to successfully land a spacecraft on the south pole of the moon, which is the bottom part of the Earth’s natural satellite.
The Chandrayaan-3’s Lander Module, which includes the lander called Vikram and a small rover weighing 26 kilograms named Pragyan, successfully landed on the moon at 6. 04 pm
The head of ISRO, S Somanath, told reporters that it will take a few hours or a day for the moon rover to come out of the spacecraft. He also mentioned that this successful landing has given India the confidence to explore possibilities of going to Mars and Venus.
The spacecraft and the vehicle with six wheels (weighing 1,752 kg in total) are made to work for about 14 Earth days on the moon.
The lander had four legs and different sensors to make sure it landed safely. These sensors included ones that measured how fast it was going, how high it was, how it was tilted, and if it had touched the ground. It also had cameras to help it avoid obstacles and know where it was.
The lander has a space where it keeps the rover and has a ramp to put it on the ground.
