Guwahati, August 21: The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has asked the public for their views on a new law to stop polygamy in the state. He shared a notice on the internet asking people to send their ideas on the law. The notice said that the Assam government has set up a committee to study if the state can make a law against polygamy. It also said that both the central government and state governments can make laws about marriage. The notice mentioned that if a state law goes against a central law, the central law is more important, unless the President agrees with the state law. It also said that people’s freedom to practice their religion has limits and can be stopped for the good of society. The notice said that having more than one wife is not an important part of Islam according to the courts. Rules that restrict the number of wives someone can have do not stop people from practicing their religion, and they are considered part of social support and positive changes for society. The laws that support monogamy are not breaking any rules, according to a notice. The notice mentioned a report from an expert committee. It also said that the state of Assam has the power to make a law to end polygamy. The committee’s report was given to the Chief Minister on August 6, and the Chief Minister said that a law to end polygamy will be introduced this year. The Chief Minister also said that the committee agreed that the state has the right to make its own laws to end polygamy. The Chief Minister also announced on Independence Day that a strict law will be made soon to end polygamy in Assam. On May 12, the Chief Minister formed a committee with four members to look at the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Act, 1937 and Article 25 of the Constitution. On July 13, the Chief Minister said that the government supports the Uniform Civil Code and wants to immediately ban polygamy in the state. The opposition parties criticized the government for making a law on polygamy when suggestions for the Uniform Civil Code are being considered by the Law Commission.
