The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the temporary release of activist Teesta Setalvad until July 19 due to a complaint that she had defamed the Gujarat Government concerning its management of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Setalvad has been charged with making up documents to accuse higher officials of the Gujarat Government which was then headed by Chief Minister Narendra Modi. A court headed by Justice BR Gavai issued a notice to the Gujarat Government in response to her plea against the Gujarat High Court’s decision to deny her bail and order her to surrender right away. Prior to this, the Supreme Court had granted a one-week delay of the Gujarat High Court’s order on Saturday.
