The government announced that the price of tomatoes has dropped to Rs 50-70 per kg due to the arrival of fresh crops in the market. They will continue to sell tomatoes at a discounted rate until the prices return to normal. Previously, the prices had gone up to Rs 250 per kg due to unseasonal rains. The Consumer Affairs Secretary said that tomato prices are currently ranging from Rs 50-70 per kg in retail markets across the country. The prices are decreasing as more fresh crops are coming in, particularly from Madhya Pradesh. The government will sell tomatoes at discounted prices in select states until the prices become normal. Cooperatives NCCF and NAFED have already started selling tomatoes at a reduced rate of Rs 40 per kg. The National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd have been selling tomatoes at discounted rates on behalf of the Consumer Affairs Ministry to control the price rise. Initially, the discounted rate was Rs 90 per kg but has been gradually reduced as the prices went down.
